BALAM FOR CONGRESS - Announcement of Running Campaign

I am pleased to announce my candidacy for the U.S. Congress. I have decided to enter the race because I care deeply about my community, about the daily struggles of hard-working Kansans, and about what’s happening in America today. Federal and state politicians have been out of touch with the true hopes of hard-working Americans. Professional politicians in their attempt to make their jobs permanent and preserve their comfort, have allowed themselves to be influenced by big corporate money and financial interests, and have given in to the demands of the powerful privileged class. They have forgotten the plight of the working poor. They have not listened to the concerns of ethnic minorities. They have neglected the single parents, the uninsured, the wounded veterans, the homeless, the small struggling farmers, and the immigrants.

The people of Kansas are tired of politics as usual. They are tired of being patronized, marginalized, and ignored by the political system. The people of Kansas Third District don’t want more of the same. They are tired of being left behind. They are hungry for fairness and justice. They are hungry for change!

Our campaign effort is going to be a direct grassroots effort. No middleman, no big money, no big media, no expensive political consultants, and no $500.00 dinner-plate banquets that only the rich can attend.

The road to the nomination will be long and hard, and the work on the campaign trail much harder. But with your steadfast support and the help of our Almighty God, we will prevail and win the victory for the people in 2008.

Your candidate is a graduate of Baker University and a long time resident of Overland Park. He has served in Kansas as educator, translator, and chaplain. He is already registered as an Independent Candidate with the Federal Election Commission. And now he’s coming to You, the People, asking for your endorsement. Please say “yes” to Joel Balam for Congress, and support important and critical issues:

1. DEFEND THE FAITH TO PRESERVE AMERICAN MORAL VALUES AND TRADITIONS. We must defend the Faith if we are to preserve our moral values and traditions. We must stop atheists and agnostics from continuing eroding the moral foundation of America. Let’s not forget we are “One Nation Under God.”

2. SUPPORT A PROPOSAL TO CONTROL AND REGULATE THE PRICE OF GASOLINE. We must not let Big Oil corporations and the monopolistic refining industry to continue oppressing American consumers. Let’s fight back by supporting legislation that can bring under control the ever-rising price of gasoline.

3. SUPPORT “THE FAIR TAX” PROPOSAL TO REDUCE TAXES AND REWARD HARD-WORKING FAMILIES. I will support and vote for the Fair Tax Proposal that is already in Congress.

This fair tax proposal will effectively reduce taxes and reward hard-working families. Under the

present tax system more and more families are forced to live in poverty. Let’s reverse that trend.

4. SUPPORT A FEDERAL HEALTH CARE PLAN. I will support a federal health plan that guarantees every United States citizen the right to health care, including prescription medication, at an affordable price. Congress has been debating this issue since 1993. I will say to the members of Congress, “Let’s cut the rhetoric!” It’s time that our government responds to the need of 47 million uninsured Americans whose lives have already been affected by the lack of basic medical care.

5. SUPPORT AN IMMIGRATION REFORM THAT IS CONSISTENT WITH AMERICAN MORAL VALUES AND TRADITIONS. Let’s support an Immigration Reform that is good for the economy and consistent with American traditional values and policies. Five past U.S. Presidents couldn’t have been wrong when they enacted policies to welcome hard-working immigrants: President Roosevelt in 1934, President Eisenhower in 1952, President Kennedy in 1963, President Johnson in 1965, and President Reagan in 1986.

6. SUPPORT OUR TROOPS AS THEY RISK THEIR LIVES TO PROTECT OUR LIBERTIES AND DEFEND OUR FREEDOM. I will stand firm in support of our troops. We cannot and must not allow political tendencies to divide our nation on this issue. As long as America’s children are under orders and in the battlefield, we must do everything to meet their needs.

7. HONOR OUR VETERANS FOR THEIR SERVICE AND SACRIFICE. Recently we have learned that the services and benefits our veterans receive are inadequate and in some instances lacking. If I am elected, it will be my priority and my duty to address their needs. I will fight hard to protect their benefits.

8. PROTECT THE RIGHT OF THE UNBORN. It is our moral duty to defend the helpless. It is our moral obligation to protect the rights of the unborn. If I am to make the right choice, I must choose life! I will not compromise my solemn duty. If elected to Congress, I will fight for the rights of the unborn in Kansas and America.

9. PROTECT THE ENVIROMENT AND SUPPORT MEASURES TO REDUCE GLOBAL WARMING. Let’s move forward in the fight to clean our environment and reduce global warming. If elected, I will support expanding our present policies with new measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and their threat to human existence. It’s our moral obligation.

10. FIGHT AGAINST HUNGER AND POVERTY. I will join the fight to reduce hunger and poverty in our third district, our state, and across our nation. This is a critical issue for over 10,000 Kansas families who are now living below the poverty level. Let’s meet our moral obligation to Kansas working poor.
